Actos Linked to Bladder Cancer

The FDA has issued a safety announcement about the risk of bladder cancer for those taking the type-2 diabetes drug Actos for over a year.  The Actos safety warning follows a five-year Actos study suggesting that long term, high-dose use of Actos may increase a patients risk for bladder cancer.  This increased risk may be greater in men than in women.

In response to that study, the FDA is warning that Actos not be used in patients with active bladder cancer or if they have a history of bladder cancer.  Actos is still being used in the United States despite France suspending Actos use and Germany recommending Actos not be used in new patients altogether.

What are the Symptoms of Bladder Cancer?

  • Blood found in the urine
  • Pain while urinating
  • Needing to urinate, but not able to
  • Back or abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite and weight
