Advantix | Frontline | Advantage | Flea & Tick Product Investigation The topical flea and tick product may not be as effective as company advertisements claim – leaving pets unprotected. The manufacturers claim that after applying Frontline and Advantix to just one part of a pet’s body, the active ingredients spread across the entire body and continue to kill fleas and ticks all month long. Despite these product claims, some watchdogs say that the active ingredients intended to kill fleas and ticks may actually be diluted when in contact with water or sunlight. Americans have an estimated 164 million pets, and the market for pet products continues to grow each year.
In addition to not being as effective as advertised, Frontline, Advantage, Advantix and other spot-on flea and tick products like them have been associated with serious adverse health effects in dogs and cats. Although many people don’t know it, the active ingredients in these products are pesticides. Reactions from application of these pesticides to dogs have been reported to include skin irritation, skin burns, seizures and death.
Bayer and Merial manufacture several spot-on flea and tick control products for dogs and cats including:
- Advantage
- Advantix
- Advocate
- Certifect
- Frontline
- K9 Advantix
