Depakote Risks & Side EffectsDepakote was originally manufactured for the purpose of helping treat the manic episodes in those who suffer from manic depressive disorder. Eventually the conditions for which it was prescribed expanded to include epilepsy, migraine headaches and certain symptoms associated with neuropathy, including chronic pain. However, studies report an increased risk of spina bifida in the babies of mothers taking Depakote during pregnancy.
Spina Bifida Linked to Depakote
The use of Depakote during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, has been associated with a number of fetal abnormalities, including spina bifida. Spina bifida is a birth defect in which the spinal cord and backbone fail to develop and close properly and occurs within the first month of pregnancy. Spina bifida is the most frequently occurring permanently disabling birth defect affecting approximately one out of every 1,000 newborns in the United States. Symptoms include:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Partial or complete lack of sensation
- Partial or complete paralysis of the legs
- Weakness of the hips, legs, or feet of a newborn
Babies born with spina bifida will suffer symptoms, requiring medical attention, over their entire lifetime. If your baby was born with spina bifida and you took Depakote during your pregnancy, it may be important to contact an attorney who can help you protect your potential legal claim.
