Final Fantasy XIII & Sony PS3 Bricking

Customers are alleging that playing Final Fantasy XIII caused their Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) consoles to freeze and become totally and permanently inoperable, a phenomenon called “bricking.”

Background:

The internet is awash with consumer complaints arising from the use of Final Fantasy XIII video game discs on Sony PS3 game consoles. These complaints detail the drastic damage caused by playing Final Fantasy XIII on the Sony PS3 system. Many consumers have suffered total “bricking” of their Sony PS3, which means their Sony PS3 becomes completely, and permanently, unable to play games or movies.

The two companies who are responsible for the products at issue are pointing their fingers at each other. Sony, maker of the PS3 system, claims the problem is with the Final Fantasy XIII product, and has offered to repair consumers’ broken systems for upwards of $200. Square Enix, the designer and marketer of Final Fantasy XIII, claims the problem is with the Sony PS3 system and has only offered to provide consumers a replacement game- the very game that damaged their Sony PS3 in the first place.
