MTBE Water Contamination

In November 2003, Congress was considering legislation that would allow MTBE manufacturers to evade responsibility for dangerous and costly MTBE leakage and spills all across the country. Cities and towns that do not take legal action prior to this legislation may be forced to bear the enormous burden of clean-up alone.

In response to this drastic legislation, litigation has commenced in numerous states across the country against oil companies, seeking reimbursement of costs incurred by water districts for remedial measures incurred after MTBE contamination in water supplies. The main source of MTBE contamination is from pipelines or leaking underground storage tanks. We encourage you to contact the appropriate authorities in your water district.
