Wellbutrin & Zyban Linked to Heart Defects in Newborns

Bupropion is the generic name for Wellbutrin (marketed as an antidepressant), as well as Zyban (marketed as a smoking cessation aid).  A recent study showed an increased incidence of congenital heart defects in infants born to mothers who have taken this drug during pregnancy.

Wellbutrin & Zyban Risks

Because depression is not uncommon in women of childbearing age, the use of Wellbutrin has been commonly prescribed to women who suffer from depression in the early stages of pregnancy.  Similarly, because women are encouraged to stop smoking while pregnant, Zyban has also been prescribed during the first trimester.

A recent article published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology suggests that there may be an increased risk of heart defects in a baby born to a mother who was taking a bupropion during pregnancy.  The study found that mothers who used Wellbutrin or Zyban during their first trimester were more than twice as likely to give birth to an infant who had a congenital heart problem known as left outflow tract defects, including problems with the aorta and left ventricle such as aortic stenosis. This heart birth defect affects the flow of blood from the heart's left chamber to the rest of the body, often requiring surgery to repair.
