Zimmer Knee Implant Pain
Since 2003, more than 150,000 Zimmer NexGen Flex-Knee implants have been sold, and many patients have experienced a substantially higher-than-expected failure of the replacement knee within a few years of surgery - one study reported the failure rate to be as high as 9% for the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral Component.
Background:
The Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral Component is a non cement piece that attaches to the bottom of the thigh bone. In most knee replacement systems, a type of surgical cement is used to hold the component in position.
It is suspected that the high failure rate is linked to design problems with the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex replacement knees. However, Zimmer has placed the blame on the orthopedic surgeons and claims that failures were caused by surgical errors, problems with the technique or the type of patient who received the knee implant.
Several prominent surgeons want a Zimmer NexGen knee replacement recall to be issued. At a March 2010 conference of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, two knee surgeons presented data suggesting that the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral Component failure rate could be as high as 9% and that the actual number of complications that require revision surgery could be even higher. Many patients could experience pain and loosening of their Zimmer NexGen knee replacement. The lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Berger, described the failure rate of the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral Component as “unacceptably high”. They also questioned the fact that the product was released for sale to the public without clinical testing.
The researchers looked at 108 knee replacement surgeries using the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral Component. They found that 9 patients required knee revision surgery due to Zimmer NexGen knee loosening and pain. They also found that 39 patients showed evidence of radiographic loosening knee implants, which the physicians did not believe were related to specific surgeons, approaches or patient type. Patients have experienced the following:
- Knee Replacement Failure
- Loosening of Replacement Knees
- Other Knee Complications and Knee Pain
Other Zimmer Knee Products:
- Zimmer CR-Flex
- Zimmer LPS-Flex
- Zimmer MIS Tibial Component
