BAUSCH & LOMB RENU LINKED TO EYE INFECTIONS

May 13, 2006: Bausch & Lomb met with the FDA presenting them with scientific data, suggesting that ReNu with MoistureLoc may increase Fusarium infection. Bausch & Lomb has decided to permanently remove their ReNu and MoistureLoc products worldwide.

What you should know:

According to an FDA statement, the FDA is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reviewing reports of 109 cases of Fusarium keratitis eye infections in people in 17 U.S. states. The CDC has obtained the data from 30 cases, which revealed that 28 people wore soft contact lenses and that most had used the ReNu contact lens solution. According to Dr. Daniel Schultz, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, "This is a serious infection and soft contact lens users should be mindful of the potential to develop this problem."

What is Fusarium keratitis?

Fusarium keratitis is a serious eye infection that causes damage to the cornea. To treat the infection, prolonged drug therapy may be required. If the drug therapy does not work, or if the infection is not treated, significant loss of vision can occur requiring the need for a corneal transplant. Some of the symptoms may include eye pain, redness, blurry vision, light hypersensitivity and discharge from the eye.
