BOTOX RISKS & SIDE EFFECTS IN CHILDREN

The well-known anti-wrinkle treatment Botox, and its competitor, Myoblock are under investigation after they have been linked to dangerous side effects. A startling report reveals that children who are treated for spasticity which accompanies cerebral palsy, are at the greatest risk of the dangerous reactions.

Background:

A report was recently released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to inform the public of the adverse reactions linked to the use of Botox and Myobloc. The report surfaces after studies link the use of these drugs to serious health complications, such as respiratory failure and death. Botox is more known for its use anti-aging use as it paralyzes muscles to eliminate wrinkles. However, it can also be used to treat a variety of muscle-spasm conditions including cerebral palsy in children. The medication relaxes the muscles by injecting botulinum toxin to block nerve impulses. This treatment becomes dangerous when this toxin spreads outside the injection site, weakening or possibly paralyzing vital muscles such as the ones we use to breathe and swallow.

The FDA has been urged by a consumer advocacy group, Public Citizen, to strengthen warnings to patients using Botox and Myobloc. FDA data reveals that the makers of the drugs had 180 adverse cases including 16 deaths reported between November 1, 1997 and December 31, 2006.

All of the deaths that the FDA is investigating involve children, many of which were being treated for muscle disorders in their legs. The FDA has also warned that there are other reports of illnesses in people of all ages. These patients are being treated for a variety of conditions and although the FDA said the problems may be related to overdoses, there have been side effects from all types of doses.

Possible Side effects:

  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Slurred speech
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty holding your head up
