DEPAKOTE LINKED TO SPINA BIFIDA

Depakote, also known as Valproic Acid, is a widely prescribed anticonvulsant drug used for afflictions associated with mood disorders, bipolar disorder, seizures, epilepsy, migraine headaches in adults, and nerve pain.

Background:

It has been reported in recent studies that mothers who were prescribed Depakote during pregancy, especially during the first trimester, are at a two to three times higher risk for having children born with birth defects. The common birth defect associated with Depakote is spina bifida which is an incomplete closure of the spinal column. There are three types of spina bifida - Occulta, Meningocele and Myelomeningocele.
