PPA Side Effects
According to the Food & Drug Administration reports, PPA™, an ingredient in some cough and cold remedies, has been associated with hemorrhagic strokes. A study by the Yale University School of Medicine also concluded that persons using PPA had an increased risk of stroke. Following publication of this study, the FDA asked that manufacturers cease distributing products containing PPA. The FDA has recommended that this widely used drug should not be considered safe for over-the-counter use.
Products containing PPA are no longer sold in the United States. However, if you have cold and flu products that were purchased during or before 2000, you should make sure these products do not contain PPA before taking them.
