Valley Solvents and Chemicals Plant Explosion
7/28/05: A chain of explosions followed by an intense fire sent a huge black plume of smoke into the air above a Fort Worth chemical plant. Four people have been injured and surrounding schools and businesses have been forced to evacuate.
What you should know:
The fire raged for hours at the Valley Solvents & Chemicals plant in the area which contained dozens of tanks holding thousands of gallons of methanol, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, ethanol, kerosene and other chemicals. Health officials have advised those nearby to stay inside with their windows closed and air conditioners off. Hazardous materials contractors have been sent in to clean up what remains of the plant.
Fire officials have ruled the fire an accident, but said the heat was so severe and the damage so extensive that it would be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. The explosion that ignited a five-alarm blaze is believed to have been started accidentally as workers unloaded methanol from a transportation truck at the chemical plant. Valley Solvents is a distributor of chemical solvents and is located at 2573 NE 33rd Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76111 in the industrial section of north Fort Worth. The facility distributes to companies in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana and northern Mexico.
