What is Actemra?

Actemra is a biologic, made of genetically-engineered proteins designed to fight against parts of the immune system causing inflammation. Biologics use living cells and are costly to produce. Even using health insurance, out of pocket expenses can run into thousands per month. It works by interrupting the chemical signal interleukin-6. Suppressing the messaging activity of the chemical signal, it reduces inflammation of the joints and relieves the systemic effects of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis.

In its early phases, researchers dubbed Actemra as a “breakthrough” because it initially was not associated with heart attacks or heart failure. Other rheumatoid arthritis drugs warn of these risks.

Investigation

In an analysis published by Boston Globe affiliate STAT News examined over 50,000 reports of adverse effects with RA drugs. Researchers found that patients were 50 percent more likely to experience heart attacks and heart failure due to Actemra.

Actemra has been used by more than 760,000 patients globally. It generated sales of 1.7 billion in 2016. Before Actemra came blockbuster drug Vioxx, which was similar in nature and used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. It was pulled off the market following reports of thousands of heart attacks and deaths.

Many patients are dissatisfied with regulatory oversights as they could have been forewarned about Actemra’s side effects. An estimated 1.5 million people in the United States suffer from severe rheumatoid arthritis. It can hinder quality of life and many depend on expensive prescriptions like Actemra to effectively treat their rheumatism.
