Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan Lawsuit
Insurance carrier giant Blue Cross and Blue Shield is in the cross-hairs of a Department of Justice and consumer lawsuit asserting that it violated antitrust laws by contractually requiring hospitals to charge higher prices to Blue Cross’s insurance competitors. These contract requirements–called “Most Favored-Nation” clauses – drive up the prices of healthcare services and insurance, stifle competition, and result in higher health insurance premiums for consumers in Michigan – all to the benefit Blue Cross’s bottom line. As a result, individuals who don’t have BlueCross insurance have to pay more.
