What You Need to Know
Paraquat is a chemical herbicide that has been linked to an increased risk of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is a serious brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and can cause difficulty with coordination, balance, and walking.
Products that contain paraquat include: Gramoxone, Firestorm, Helmquat, and Parazone.
Farmers and agricultural workers exposed to paraquat may be at risk of Parkinson’s disease. Zimmerman Reed is helping individuals and families who developed Parkinson’s disease from exposure to the herbicide paraquat – fill out our free case review form or call us at 800.887.8029.

What is paraquat?
Paraquat is one of the most popular chemical herbicides used by farmers. Chemical herbicides are more commonly referred to as “weed killers.” Paraquat is the active ingredient in weed killers such as Gramoxone, Firestorm, Helmquat, and Parazone. While paraquat is widely used in the US, it is reportedly banned in 32 countries because of its high toxicity.
Is paraquat toxic?
Paraquat is known to be an effective weed kill, but it is also a toxic chemical with serious health risks. Even a small amount ingested or inhaled may be fatal. In 2017, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined certain risk measures were necessary for herbicide products containing paraquat to meet the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), including;
- Label changes emphasizing paraquat toxicity and supplemental warning materials;
- Targeted training materials for paraquat users;
- Closed-system packaging for all non-bulk (less than 120 gallon) end use product containers of paraquat; and
- Restricting the use of all paraquat products to certified applicators only.
Does paraquat cause Parkinson’s disease?
Paraquat lawsuits allege that paraquat can interfere with dopaminergic neurons in the brain by creating oxidative stress. Scientists have generally concluded that oxidative stress is a major risk factor in the cause of Parkinson’s disease. Multiple epidemiological studies have found that occupational exposure to paraquat, like the type of exposure a farmer who uses paraquat would expect, more than doubles the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.
Did you see a paraquat TV commercial?
Law firms and advertiser are running paraquat TV commercials encouraging farmers and agricultural workers exposed to paraquat to call a number to speak to an attorney. Often, the paraquat TV commercial is sponsored by an advertising company or law firm that will refer the case to someone else.
